Naser al-Din Shah, the fourth king of the Qajar dynasty, ruled Iran for nearly fifty years. He traveled to European countries three times during his reign. His first journey began at the age of 43 on Sunday, April 20, 1873 and he visited Russia, Germany, Belgium, England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Ottoman countries. After traveling from Tehran to Anzali, Shah Qajar left for Russia by ship through the Caspian Sea.
As written in the Russian press of that period, half of the population of St. Petersburg gathered on Newski Boulevard on May 22, 1873 to watch the arrival of the Shah of Iran to the Russian court.
Nikolai Nikolayevich Karzin painted the above watercolor painting of the reception ceremony, which shows Alexander II of Russia and Naser al-Din Shah in a carriage.
After presenting the painting, the description of the welcoming ceremony in Farsi script was written on a piece of cardboard by Naser al-Din Shah and placed on the glass of the painting.
